Have you been making your way through the list of Lincoln Book Award nominees?
If you answered no... why not? It's super easy, you get prizes, and you might even win some Cubs tickets! (Plus, your English teacher's probably making you read anyway, right? Two birds, one stone, 'Kits!) If you answered yes, we've come up with some *extra* prizes for you! You can now pick up some flair for each nominee that you read! Check out Ms. Chadwick's, Ms. Brown-Powell's, and Mr. Chan's lanyards (...SO FAR!) below: Did you know December is National "Read a New Book Month"? It's true!

If you answered YES those questions, come see Mrs. Brown-Powell in East Library for a required permission slip ASAP (as in BY THURSDAY MORNING). See the flyer below for more information. Here at East Library we are all about getting books into your hands and pizza into your mouths. In fact, we have not one, but two ongoing programs that combine our love of both! Now, if you're thinking to yourself, "Noooo, Chadwick got after me for eating my lunch in there one time," well... okay, you maybe have a point. The pizza-eating *is* reserved for special occasions. But still: free pizza, guys! BOOKS 'R US BOOK CLUB
Do you like pizza, book discussions, and meeting authors? Starting in October, join Ms. Brown-Powell and the Books 'R Us book club after school on every other Monday in the East Library Reading Room. There are a lot of great books on the club's list this year, including Children of Blood and Bone, Trevor Noah's Born a Crime, and The 57 Bus. We'll also be having author visits (and/or Skype sessions) and even a private screening of the upcoming film "The Hate U Give," based on Angie Thomas's book (which Books 'R Us read last year). Questions? Pop into East Library, stop by the Books 'R Us table at next week's activity fair, or email Mrs. Brown-Powell. LINCOLN BOOK AWARD PROGRAM Do you like pizza, books, and/or the Chicago Cubs? This year will be ETHS's third year participating in The Lincoln Book Award Program, which is a statewide program designed to encourage high school students to read. Participation is super easy: all you have to do is read the nominated books and then check in with one of the library staff. Read just one and you get invited to our "Pizza & Previews" party in March. Read just four and you not only qualify to vote on which book should win the state's award, but at ETHS you ALSO get entered into a raffle for two FREE Cubs tickets. Read more than four of the nominees and you get more raffle entries AND additional prizes. Questions? Check out the ETHS Lincoln Book Award page, pop into East Library, or email Mrs. Chadwick. Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year, Wildkits! To our new freshman class: Welcome! We look forward to getting to know all of you this year and over the years to come! To our returning students: Welcome! We've had a few changes around the libraries, so heads up! What's Different?
You may recall that beloved East Librarian Mrs. Figel retired at the end of last year. She'll still be around from time to time as a substitute, but Mrs. Rosen and Mr. Latham will now be sharing duties in East Library. (And, of course, Mrs. Chadwick and Ms. Brown-Powell still live there, too.) Mr. Latham will also still be spending part of his day in Central Library, but otherwise you will be seeing two new faces in there this year. Our new librarian, Ms. Morgan, will be out on the floor during most periods in Central. She is joined by Ms. Simon, who you may remember seeing around as a sub during previous years. (Longtime staff member Mrs. Iverson will still be floating around between the two libraries as well, though she'll primarily be in Central.) What's the Same? Central Library is still your place to go for all things nonfiction! Central will also once again remain open until 6:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays this year, so if you need a quiet place to do work after school or before practice, come see us! East Library is still your place to go for all things fiction! East also houses ETHS's entire graphic novel collection, Spanish language books, and our ETHS Alumni Collection, as well as its own smaller collection of nonfiction (including lots of poetry and biographical works). If you've checked out anything this past week, you may have noticed that you aren't being given the customary two weeks before those books are due. Believe it or not, we only have a few weeks of class left before semester exams. (I know!) Since the libraries need time to track down all of our books and sort out overdue fines before those exams start and everyone takes off for the summer, all materials will be due Friday, May 4th. If you do need to keep a book past that date, you'll need to fill out a circulation extension form (and possibly offer some form of tribute) in person in one of the libraries on May 4th in order to avoid overdue fines. Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated! Thank you! :) The final round of our 1st Annual March Madness Book Bracket has concluded and the tournament winner is... Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give! (To be honest, the experts all sort of predicted this.)
Congratulations to Mr. Winchester for earning the highest overall score, followed closely by Ms. Chaitkin and Ms. Moneypenny, and a special congratulations to Maeve McMahon, who earned our highest student score (and tied three teachers for fourth place overall)! Thanks to all who participated! (Click HERE to see more about the tournament and to see all the final bracket standings.) |
