Like many artists, Emily Dickinson -- whose 182nd birthday is today -- wasn't truly appreciated until after her death, although her own reclusive nature and eccentricities were certainly a major factor in the delay. Although most of her acquaintances were probably aware of Dickinson's writing, it was not until after her death in 1886 -- when a younger sister discovered her cache of poems -- that the breadth of Dickinson's work became apparent. Dickinson's first collection of poetry was published in 1890 by personal acquaintances who heavily edited the content. A complete and mostly unaltered collection of her poetry became available for the first time in 1955 when The Poems of Emily Dickinson was published by scholar Thomas H. Johnson. MRC has several collections of Emily Dickinson's poetry, as well as books about her life. ETHS's Books 'R US Book Club will be meeting again tonight after school in the MRC (E201). We will again discuss this month's book selection, Cold Fury, and talk about next week's special author visit from T.M. Goeglein!
Questions? Concerns? Contact Mrs. Brown-Powell via email or in the MRC today. Did you know that now is actually the PERFECT time to check out books from the MRC? Why, you ask? Because normally when you check out a book, we tell you that it's due in two weeks, right? But where are you going to be in two weeks? Not here at ETHS! Since we obviously don't expect you to bring books back during Winter Break, you get to keep any material checked out now for an EXTRA TWO WEEKS! Consider it our holiday gift to you.
