Two of the young adult genre's most well-known and well-loved authors, Jacqueline Woodson and Judy Blume, share a birthday today. Jacqueline Woodson is an author who writes books targeted at children and adolescents. She is best known for Miracle's Boys, which won the Coretta Scott King Award in 2001 and her Newbery Honor titles After Tupac & D Foster, Feathers, and Show Way. Her work is filled with strong African-American themes, generally aimed at a young adult audience. She is an open lesbian with a lifelong partner and two children. Judy Blume has written many novels for children and young adults which have exceeded sales of 80 million and been translated into 31 languages. Blume's novels for teenagers were among the first to tackle racism, menstruation, divorce, bullying, masturbation, and teen sex. Blume has used these subjects to generate discussion, but they have also been the source of controversy regarding age-appropriate reading. Both Woodson and Blume are featured in the short story collection Places I Never Meant to Be: Original Stories by Censored Writers, available in MRC. We also have many novels written by both of them (click the 'Read More' link below right to see lists of some). ***Author Biographies borrowed and adapted from Wikipedia.com
